Flare Night History

Flare Night History

Lake Orion Flare Night began in 1945 as a celebration marking the end of World War II. Members of the Lake Orion Rotary Club invited lakefront residents to light highway flares simultaneously around the shoreline, creating a glowing ring of light symbolizing peace, remembrance, and community. The tradition quickly became an annual event.

For decades, the Lake Orion Lions Club has proudly organized Flare Night, with proceeds supporting vision programs, scholarships, and numerous local charitable projects. Every year, on the evening before the Independence Day fireworks, thousands of flares illuminate the shoreline, bringing together families, neighbors, and visitors to celebrate our nation's freedom while honoring those who have served our country.

In 2026, Flare Night celebrates its 81st year and coincides with America's 250th Birthday, making this year's event especially meaningful. The addition of Remembrance Flares allows everyone—including those without lakefront property—to participate by honoring or remembering loved ones while helping preserve one of Lake Orion's most treasured community traditions.

Flare Placement

How to light an Orion highway flare:

Flare spacing is determined by the homeowner. Many use a placement of approximately 5 feet.

Consider a nonflammable plate or material to catch the burning flare residue drip that can damage a lawn.

Once the flare is ignited, carefully place it on the ground (do not drop). Do not hold the flare in an upright position as molten residue from the combustion process will burn if dripped on your hand.

Many homeowners place flares where they desire, remove the safety caps, light one flare and use it to light all other flares.

Remembrance Flares

As America celebrates its 250th Birthday, the Lake Orion Lions Club invites you to be part of a special Flare Night tradition by dedicating a Remembrance Flare in honor or memory of someone who holds a special place in your heart.

For 81 years, Flare Night has illuminated the shores of Lake Orion, bringing our community together in a breathtaking display of light and tradition. This year, each remembrance flare can represent a cherished memory, a heartfelt thank you, or a tribute to someone who helped light the way for others.

At 10:00 PM on July 3rd, the shoreline will glow with thousands of flares. Among them will be the Remembrance Flares dedicated by families, friends, neighbors, and businesses from near and far.

The Lake Orion Lions Club will deliver  all Remembrance Flares to Preston Island (Sandbar Island) for Flare Night.
